The Nike Dunk Low is a perfect example of how things evolve over time. This sneaker started life as a high-top basketball shoe specifically designed for college teams back in 1985. Originally named the College Color High, the kicks underwent a last-minute name change because their release happened to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the first slam dunk.
Designer Peter Moore originally wanted the shoes to appeal to a younger crowd, and they did — just not the one he expected. Instead of basketball players lacing up these kicks, it was skateboarders. They loved how the shoe’s pivot circle gripped the board.
It took a while for Nike to catch on, and it wasn’t until 2002 that the brand re-engineered the shoe specifically for Nike SB. That year also saw the birth of the Nike Dunk Low. It’s been quite the journey for this little low-top.
The journey continues with two new colorways anticipated to light up the skate park, court or wherever else you want to kick back and chill. The men’s “Free.99” drops on June 4 and the women’s “Sunset” colorway on June 25 (both admittedly a bit after they were originally supposed to hit.)
With the “Free.99” colorway, you’ll get to rock out on your board in style with all of the primary colors. The mainly white leather upper is shrouded in Roma Green, red, blue and yellow overlays inspired by the candy, chips and sodas you’d find at your neighborhood bodega.
The right and left shoes are opposite of each other when it comes to color, creating a mismatched look that will make you the talk of the halfpipe. One thing that’s the same is the Light Chocolate Swoosh on the lateral and medial side of each shoe, as well as the tan rubber outsole.
The “Sunset” colorway has that same mismatched look but in different colors. It takes a pastel turn with Green Glow, Sunset Pulse, lilac, yellow and blue overlays on top of the white leather base. The yellow speckled rubber outsole matches on both shoes, as does the white foam midsole. Both kicks offer Nike branding on the tongue and heel. The “Sunset” women’s shoe carries that to the insole as well, but the “Free.99” has a special insole featuring eponymous branding.
Whether you’re feeling that colorful ’80s basketball vibe or the fresh spring look, both of these Nike Dunk Low colorways have something to add to your collection. Grab the men’s “Free.99” on June 4 and women’s “Sunset” on June 25 online or at your local Hibbett | City Gear.
