Fresh Off The Block Ep. 6 - Cincinnati's Brince Etter

Each episode of City Gear's Fresh Off The Block series, produced in partnership with Nike and Nice Kicks, takes viewers to a new city to explore the area's impact on the music scene, basketball, personal style, and the neighborhoods behind the city's heartbeat. Episode 6 takes us to Cincinnati, OH to meet rapper Brince Etter.

Brince Etter doesn't just walk to the beat of West Cincinnati's drum; he IS the beat. On his side of the city, the culture of hip-hop is grounded in the OG style of the genre - a celebration of where hip-hop came from and what it's become.

Brince shares his city's deep love of hip-hop. From playing basketball in his neighborhood, beatboxing with friends, and tapping out beats on cafeteria tables, hip-hop has always been there. It's in his DNA, and in 2021, Brince decided to pursue his passions as a rapper.

When he's on stage, Brince says he is inspired by everything, including family. His art draws inspiration from his mother who encourages him to keep going even when he's tired, when he's frustrated, or when he's unhappy because it will always get better. He is inspired by his father, who has always taught and demonstrated to him the importance of giving back to their community. And Brince is inspired by his sister who helps produce his music.

If family is the foundation of his creativity, then his sneakers are the foundation of his style, Brince says. The shoes are what he calls the meat and potatoes of any fit, and he knows there's only one place to go for fresh kicks: City Gear. "Sometimes I just go in there for the smell of new shoes," he says.
