If you’re a true Jordan fan, you have an appreciation for the histories and heritage that informs each sneaker design and colorway. One of the most iconic and collectible color palettes in the Jumpman brand is, without a doubt, some combo of white, black and red… and elephant print.

Just in time for back to school, the Air Jordan 3 Retro “Fire Red Denim” colorway drops on August 27 in toddler, preschool, grade school kids’ and men’s sizes.

Dressed in a crisp white leather upper, this Jordan 3 Retro swaps out the signature smooth grey elephant print with a textured elephant-patterned denim, offering an edgy detail to an already classic shoe.

When Tinker Hatfield designed the Air Jordan 3 back in 1988, it was a shoe of several firsts. The AJ 3 ditched the Jordan Wings logo in favor of the now-legendary Jumpman insignia. It was the first in the Jordan Brand to provide a visibility into the shoe’s technology by way of that Air window. And, perhaps most prominently, it was the first shoe to feature elephant print on its upper.

Elephant print seemed like a bold choice at the time, but Tinker Hatfield was young and hungry, out to prove to the world that he was worthy of taking up the Air Jordan design mantle. The grey-on-grey crinkled look of the elephant print was exciting, fresh, sexy and refined.

Save for the denim material, the “Fire Red Denim” silhouette is very much in line with Hatfield’s original shoe. White tumbled leather comprises the sneaker’s upper, accentuated by elephant print playing out along the toe, sides, heel and lacing system. Restrained pops of Fire Red serve to emphasize the shoe’s heritage design features. The color peppers the custom-fit lower lacing system, appears on the embroidered Jumpman tongue logo and liner, gets a perforated treatment around the ankle and embellishes the heel’s Nike Air branding.

An external, clear TPU overlay heel counter contributes to the stability of the shoe, while that visible Air-Sole unit, energy-returning foam midsole and court-tested rubber outsole all offer exceptional performance through high-quality materials.
