Sneakers Release – Jordan 5 Retro “Shattered Backboard”/ “Craft” Sail/Orange Blaze/Metallic Silver Launching 10/2

The Air Jordan 5 Retro has been reimagined countless times since its original release in 1990. Now, the shoe inspired by World War II fighter planes is getting yet another makeover. The Jordan 5 Retro “Shattered Backboard”/ “Craft” men’s basketball shoe drops October 2 at Hibbett | City Gear.

The latest Jordan Retro “Shattered Backboard”/ “Craft” colorway is inspired by the AJ 1 Retro shoe of the same name (that was originally re-released back in 2015 to much acclaim). The Retro 5 will come in a Sail, Orange Blaze, Metallic Silver and black scheme that vaguely resembles the coloring of a basketball.

While most AJ 5 Retro kicks use Tinker Hatfield’s original design to a T, this one shakes things up a bit. Rather than a full leather Sail upper, the “Craft” Jordan 5 features Sail mesh panels around the ankle — the first Jordan 5 Retro to have this look. Perhaps this will make the shoe more breathable? It could be a nice touch, especially if you’re worried about scuffing your leather while you peruse the streets.

Otherwise, the color blocking remains nearly the same. It follows the scheme of the “Shattered Backboard” AJ 1 shoe from a few years ago. The all-Sail base has flourishes of black at the top eyelet, midsole, ankle and lace toggle. There’s also a black Jumpman on the heel, along with a partly black outsole with the word “Jordan” etched vertically.

The midsole is mostly Orange Blaze, except for the jagged shark teeth design at the forefoot. This is gray and speckled with black dots — perhaps to mimic the effect of broken glass as the backboard breaks? You’ll see this same orange on the insole and the Jordan branding on the gray tongue.

As with any high-top basketball shoe from the 90s, this probably won’t be your go-to court shoe. Instead, it’s best for expressing your individuality in your everyday look. Keep things pale and monochromatic by going with white joggers, or add a splash of color that matches these shoes with an orange T-shirt.
